Engineering Manager

This position requires you to reside in Japan during your employment with Wizcorp.

The ideal Engineering Manager candidate will be able to:

  • Mentor and grow engineers of all levels, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.

  • Bridge the gap between company needs and team execution by maintaining and updating the tools, talents, and skills the team needs to drive future studio-wide engineering growth.

  • Maintain the ability to contribute high-quality code as an individual contributor on assigned projects.

Roles and Responsibilities: 🛠️🧪✨

  • Champion code quality by setting engineering standards and, along with the Technical Leads, performing insightful code reviews that serve as teaching moments for the team.

  • Manage and mentor a team of engineers, conducting regular 1:1s to provide them with actionable feedback, actionable feedback to promote career progression, and performance management, while escalating concerns and blockers to Service Director, as necessary.

  • Unblock the team by identifying systemic hurdles, refining processes, and advocating for the resources or technical shifts necessary for success, in collaboration with the projects' Project Managers and Technical Leads.

  • Maintain hands-on proficiency by helping on the more challenging elements of engineering and contributing directly to projects as necessary without losing sight of broader management duties.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with art and production leads to ensure technical feasibility and alignment on multi-project and company-wide goals.

  • Cultivate an growth-minded engineering culture that prioritizes a curriculum of learning, knowledge sharing, and rigorous "best practice" documentation, along with the Service Director.

  • Navigate ambiguous challenges with a calm, decisive approach, balancing their reports' immediate concerns with the studio’s long-term technical health.

Onboarding process 🈴🗼🌅

We strive to make the onboarding process as smooth and worry-free as possible.

Upon acceptance of our offer, you will receive our working agreement and our rules of employment.

Ideally, we want you to join us within a month, but we can adjust to your current work situation.

On your first day, your manager will introduce you to your team and will set a schedule for reviews over the 6-month probation period. We will give you all the support you need to complete it successfully.

📍 Business hours and Location 📍

⏲ Flexibility in time

We all have different creative clocks, and you know yours better than we do.

We will expect you to work 8 hours per day from Monday to Friday with core hours between 11:00 and 16:00 (excluding a 1-hour break). The rest will be up to you.

🌎 Flexibility in location

Wizcorp fully embraces telework, and most of us work from home. Office space is also available for your convenience, and you will have access to meeting rooms and hot desks.

We may require you to work onsite on specific occasions when using highly specialized equipment.

You must reside in Japan during your employment at Wizcorp. We offer legal support for visa applications. Depending on your situation, we may allow you to work outside of Japan during your probation period.

💴 Salary 💴

650K - 700K/month

All new staff members’ initial salary will be based on experience and interview evaluation.

Includes a 6-month probation period. Salary is not affected nor changed during that period.

💹 Raises and bonuses 💹

  • You will be reviewed once a year, and your salary will be adjusted to match your gained experience and project contributions.
  • Pay raises are awarded around March each year, in line with our budget and financial forecasting for the subsequent year.
  • We do not offer bonuses.

🈷️ Additional benefits 🈷️

  • Monthly allowance for home office equipment and supplies (15,000 JPY/month)
  • Private language tutoring (Japanese and/or English)
  • Commute fees (however, train passes are not reimbursed)

  • Summer/winter vacation: 5 days per year (paid, applicable after the probation period)

Experience & Requirements

🤹 Skillset 🤹

  • Strong understanding of software development fundamentals, design theory, and development processes

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Strong intrapersonal skills with an eye for enabling the growth and improvement of the people around you

  • Strong personal time management

⭐ Experience ⭐

  • University degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline; or relevant professional experience

  • Professional experience in teaching technical concepts or mentoring in technical fields

  • Experience evaluating reports in periodic performance reviews and providing clear and actionable feedback

  • 5+ years experience software engineering in the game industry

  • 3+ years experience as a team lead or people manager

  • Fluency in both English and Japanese

  • Must have experience with C++ and C#

  • Experience with Git or other version control systems
