Why Generic Models Fall Short

Different genres of games operate in distinct spheres, each with their own linguistic rules, cultural nuances and quirks. With increasingly picky fanbases and rigidly defined norms, poor linguistic choices can ruin a title’s reputation, and have devastating effects on IP perception. C-suite pressure to adopt AI as a cost cutting measure can therefore easily have the opposite effect if narrative quality falls through due to broad purpose AI models simply not being suited to the specific needs of game development. In practicality, this can be as simple as a model not being able to distinguish between a ‘Tank’ in an RPG and an FPS, potentially leading to some very strange battlefield conversations, all the way through to total narrative failures. 

The ideal scenario is a combined system, in which a specialised AI model trained specifically on game or genre-specific data is paired with an expert local linguist to ensure that tone and meaning holds as the game scales, and efficiency isn’t a trade-off for accuracy. With new European regulations coming into play around the need for reliably sourced and attributable data, gaming studios already have a distinct advantage should they choose to leverage it.

The Technical Edge of Game-Specific Training Data

Broad-purpose AI models guess the next word based on everyday language scraped from the breadth of the internet, which means they routinely miss game-specific rules, dialogue branches, and character personalities. Training an AI directly on clean studio assets like dialogue scripts, item lists, and character style guides gives the system a deep understanding of how games actually work. Industry studies show that when an AI is trained on specialized game content, it reduces the time human translators spend fixing basic mistakes by 35% to 45%. Because these models often work without seeing an actual game screen or assets, and lack the ability to contextualise text, they are easily confused. On the other hand, a game-trained model naturally keeps character voices consistent across long scripts, avoids breaking underlying code variables, and respects tight character limits on user interface buttons. By training the AI on real game logic, studios get significantly higher quality on the first pass, letting human experts skip routine cleanup and focus entirely on making the story feel natural to local players.

AI as a Strategic Multiplier

The real value of AI in 2026 lies both in resource optimisation and cost saving. By deploying it as a tool to empower expert talent, not replace it, localisation teams are able to act as quality managers rather than bulk translators. Their efforts are consequently reserved for optimising tone and meaning as part of the bigger picture, instead of grinding through hours of text one word at a time and potentially losing sight of the overarching story. 

Maximising global revenue requires reaching users in their own language, with data showing that 76% of consumers were more likely to buy products in their native language, with 40% flat out refusing to buy otherwise. Integrating AI into localisation workflows and treating it as a priority allows it to move upstream in the development process, preventing hidden costs later down the line as teams scramble for late fixes to broken UI and nonsensical text. The result of this? Up to a 92.5% reduction in bug-fixing costs compared to post-production fixes.

The Player Experience Priority

Ultimately, games are about the player experience. No amount of technology can provide a magic formula for player excitement or emotional resonance, and the role of localisation specialists will always be that of a cultural expert who can manipulate language to achieve this. AI models will serve to streamline localization, but it should always sit in a workflow controlled and informed by industry specialists, and trained on relevant data.
